Reception

Suitable Clothing

In Reception a lot of our time is spent outside. Please ensure that your child is well equipped for all weather. This includes sending your child in with a water bottle, a sun hat/glasses and sun cream that is clearly named. As we approach the cooler months you may want to send hats and gloves into school. These are best kept in your child's bookbag in their tray.

PE

The children have P.E lessons every Friday. The children are able to come into school in their PE kit on a Friday and wear this all day. 

Reading

We send home book bags and reading diaries daily which should also come into school everyday. We will send home new reading books on Friday ready for the weekend.

Tapestry

Remember to look on Tapestry frequently to see some of the amazing things we are getting up to! We will continue to keep updating Tapestry with any important information as well as any observations we make on your children. Alternatively we would love you to upload anything that your child is doing at home as we love to learn about your child's learning journey at home. 

  

Water Bottles

All children have been given a school water bottle. This needs to be brought to school each day having been washed and re filled with fresh water from home. Children will be reminded at the end of the day to bring home their lunch bag and water bottle to be washed ready for the next day. We have turned off our water filter system so children will not be able to fill up their water bottle in the usual way. All classes have access to drinking water throughout the day should the children require extra water.

Coats

Please ensure your child brings a coat to school each day. We always try to allow the children their outdoor breaks which may mean us putting coats on to go out in the rain as much as possible without getting too wet. Please ensure all coats are clearly named.

Learning to Read with Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised

 

At our school, we are committed to ensuring that every child becomes a confident, fluent reader. We teach early reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, a complete, systematic phonics programme approved by the Department for Education.

Phonics is one of the most important skills children learn in their early years. It teaches children how letters represent sounds, helping them to read words and spell accurately.

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a way of teaching children to read by helping them understand the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and written letters or groups of letters (graphemes).

Children learn to:

• Recognise letter sounds.
• Blend sounds together to read words.
• Segment words into sounds for spelling.
• Read common exception words that do not follow regular phonics patterns.
• Develop fluency and confidence when reading.

What is Little Wandle?

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a phonics programme that provides a structured progression of learning from Reception through to Year 1 and beyond.

The programme ensures that:

• Learning progresses in small, manageable steps.
• Children revisit and practise previously taught sounds regularly.
• Reading books closely match the phonics knowledge children have been taught.
• Children receive support quickly if they need extra practice.

The programme is designed to give children the best possible start on their journey to becoming successful readers.

How We Teach Phonics

In Reception and Year 1, children take part in daily phonics sessions where they learn:

New Sounds

Children are taught new letter-sound correspondences and how to recognise them in words.

Blending for Reading

Children learn to blend sounds together to read words accurately and fluently.

Segmenting for Spelling

Children break words down into individual sounds to help them spell.

Tricky Words

Children learn common exception words that cannot be fully decoded using phonics alone.

Reading Practice Sessions

Children read in small groups several times each week with a trained adult. These sessions focus on:

Reading Books Sent Home

Your child will bring home a reading book that matches the phonics sounds they have already learned in school.

This is important because it allows children to practise reading independently and develop confidence and fluency.

Children may also bring home a sharing book to enjoy with family members. This book may contain sounds and words that they have not yet been taught and is intended to be read together.

How You Can Help at Home

Parents and carers play a vital role in supporting reading development.

You can help by:

Reading Little and Often

Spend 5-10 minutes each day listening to your child read.

Practising Phonics Sounds

Encourage your child to say the pure sounds they are learning in school.

For example:

rather than adding an "uh" sound at the end.

Encouraging Blending

When your child is unsure of a word, encourage them to sound it out and blend the sounds together.

Re-reading Familiar Books

Repetition helps children develop fluency, confidence and understanding.

Reading aloud to your child every day develops language, imagination and a love of reading.

In Reception we follow Mastering Number: a nationwide project aimed at teachers and pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. It is aimed at strengthening the understanding of number, and fluency with number facts, among children in the first three years of school. Over the year, we will use a range of materials and representations, including a small abacus-like piece of equipment called a rekenrek.

Welcome to Reception - Autumn Term

Welcome to our Reception class! We are delighted to welcome both new and returning families to what promises to be a wonderful Autumn Term full of exciting learning, discovery and fun.

This term, we will be settling into school routines, making new friends, and developing our confidence as learners through a range of engaging activities and experiences. Our learning will be inspired by two key texts: The Gingerbread Man and Festivals by Jane Bingham.

Through The Gingerbread Man, children will enjoy listening to stories, retelling events, exploring characters and joining in with creative activities linked to the tale. As we read Festivals, we will learn about a variety of celebrations and special events from different cultures and communities, helping us to understand and appreciate the world around us.

Throughout the term, we will be developing our skills across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage, including communication and language, literacy, mathematics, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development. We will also spend lots of time learning through play, exploring both indoors and outdoors.

Remember to keep an eye out on Tapestry where we look forward to sharing our learning journey with you and celebrating all the amazing progress your children make during their first term in Reception.
