In a world where children spend so much time in front of a screen and play out far less than they used to, Shavington Primary recognises the importance of outdoor play and have prioritised it as a project this year.
We have implemented the Outdoor Play And Learning (OPAL) progamme, making use of our extensive grounds. Neurological research has proven that play is the only activity which lights up every part of the brain and it also allows children to practice and build skills in language, cooperation and collaboration.
At Shavington Primary School we have spent this year developing our play offer at lunchtimes. All children from nursery to year 6 have access to all the grounds. We have trees for climbing, a large mud kitchen, a digging are, den building, a Ninja warrior course, bikes and scooters, quiet areas, a dressing up area, climbing equipment and lots more. We are currently awaiting the delivery of sand for our giant sand pit.
The impact of this project has been amazing; it has reduced playtime fall outs and even with increasing risky play, it has reduced the number of injuries because the children are taught how to manage risk themselves and are involved in the assessments before new areas are introduced. Parents report to us that their children are happier and talk excitedly about the project and we are looking forward to exciting additions in the future.
Any donation or help is really appreciated as we are limited on what we can spend and we would love to make lunchtimes as exciting and interesting as possible for all our children.
