Year 5 2018 - 2019

Miss Spencer

Welcome to Year 5!

I hope you have all had a wonderful Summer holiday and that are ready to start an exciting new year!

Our topic for this term is the Vikings! We will be reading Beowulf by Michael Morpurgo - a story set in  fifth-century Denmark, where a murderous monster stalks the night and only the great prince of the Geats has the strength and courage to defeat him. The story is regarded by many as the oldest surviving epic in British literature and I am hoping that we will all enjoy it! During our topic lessons, we will learn all about the Vikings - both as invaders and as settlers.

In English this term, we will be using extracts from our class book to practise our writing skills for a variety of different purposes. Children will be given opportunities to take part in role play scenarios to immerse them in the text and give their writing purpose. The text styles that we will be covering will include: invitations, character descriptions, formal letters, poetry and how to write in journalistic styles.

In maths, we will be developing our skills in place value, addition and subtraction and statistics. We will be using our reasoning and problem solving skills to create a deeper learning.

Keep practising those times tables at home, as they will help you in your maths lessons.

In science, this term’s schemes of work will be learning all about different forces and then we will move onto learning about properties of materials.

You will be able to access an electronic version of the homework grid using the class website. The children now have a section in their journals where the homework grid for each term will be stuck in. I have asked that children keep a record of when they have completed a task by getting a parent/or guardian to sign and date the box.

The children will be given weekly on a Monday. Please make sure that your child learns these spellings over the week as they shall be tested on the following Monday.

Children are encouraged to continue reading at home and keep a record of this in their journals. This can be a book they have chosen from the school library or one that they are reading at home. I will be checking the children's journals to see if they are keeping their reading record up-to-date. It does not always have to be a book! If you have found an interesting online article, maybe a film or game review or even a magazine, this all counts and strengthens your reading abilities.

PE is every Tuesday and Thursday. Children will need both their indoor and outdoor kit with them at all times and these are to stay in school for the whole term. Please ensure that your child has their kit in school for these days. A list of the required Kit can be found on the 'Uniform' section of the school website.

Water bottles

All children have been provided with a school water bottle. These need to be kept in school during the week and taken home to be washed on a Friday.
