Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 1

Happy New Year to you all!

We hope that you have had a great Christmas holiday and that Santa was good to you all.

We are so excited to be entering into the year 2020 and to be starting our new topic!

This term our topic is going to be ......

Catching A Lift With The Naughty Bus

We are going to be exploring the UK and finding out all about the countries within in it. With the help of the naughty bus, we are going to be using our geography skills to locate places on maps and find out about each country's: culture, food, traditions and special events.  We are also going to be thinking about how language can change within countries as well as how the weather will differ from location to location and as we progress through the seasons. Also, we are going to be thinking about traditional dance as well as planning and making an exciting D&T project.

It is going to be a fast ride this term! Don't forget to fasten your seatbelts.

Please remember:  All children need to be in school for the week of the 8th of June 2020 for the phonics screening test.

Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit in on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on a Wednesday and Thursday.

Water Bottles

All chidlren have been given a new water bottle at the begining of the year. Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water.  Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed ready for the new week. Please can you fill your child's water bottle on a monday so that they have fresh water at the beginning of each week.

In year 1, reading is extremely important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school every day. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this, we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary. Each week there will be a reading focus for you and your child to look at when you read at home- this will be stuck in your child's diary each week.

There is a new AutumnTerm homework grid for the children to complete.  This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website.  The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.

Children will also be given spelling homework. Spellings will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then they will have a quiz on these spelling the following Friday. Please support your child at home with these key spellings.

Phonics screening test

All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 8th June 2020 due to the Phonics screening test.
