Welcome to the Summer Term in Year 1

Phonics screening test

All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 10th June 2019 due to the Phonics screening test.

We hope that you had a lovely Easter break and that the Easter Bunny visited your home with lots of yummy chocolate eggs!  Time is flying by and it is incredible to think that your child is now in the Summer Term of Year 1!

Did you know that Chester Zoo started in Shavington?  This term we will be learning about George Mottershead and his determination to build a zoo without bars.  In our science lessons we will be sorting animals into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.  Do you know the difference between these classifications of animals?  Sea creatures will be the inspiration for music lessons.

George Mottershead - founder of Chester Zoo.

PE

Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit to school on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on Monday and Wednesday.

Water Bottles

Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water.  Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed and refilled ready for the new week.

Reading

In year 1 reading is really important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school everyday. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary.

Homework

There is a new Summer Term homework grid for the children to complete.  This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website.  The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term, so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.

The child will also have some spellings homework.  Five words will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then he or she has a week in which to learn how to spell these words.  The class has a spelling quiz on Friday morning.  Please support your child as he or she learns how to spell these words.
