Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 1

Happy New Year to all of our children and parents! We hope that you enjoyed your Christmas and New Year celebrations.  Thank you very much for the lovely Christmas presents that you bought for us - you are very generous.

The Spring Term has now begun and we continue to have fun as we learn together.  The topic that we are exploring is “Around the world in 80 days”. Over the next few weeks we will be learning about different countries around the world.  We start our journey in Scotland, where we will be celebrating Hogmanay. We will then travel to China, Africa and England.  So pack your suitcase, grab your passport and sun lotion and off we go!

Whilst we are visiting Scotland, we will be reading a story called "Wee Granny and the Ceilidh" by Elizabeth McKay.

PE

Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit to school on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on Monday and Wednesday.

Water Bottles

Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water.  Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed and refilled ready for the new week.

Reading

In year 1 reading is really important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school everyday. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary.

Homework

There is a new Spring Term homework grid for the children to complete.  This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website.  The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term, so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.

The child will also have some spellings homework.  Five words will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then he or she has a week in which to learn how to spell these words.  The class has a spelling quiz on Friday morning.  Please support your child as he or she learns how to spell these words.

Phonics screening test

All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 10th June 2019 due to the Phonics screening test.

Watch our video of Scottish dancing.  We had lots of fun!

There is a video recording of the story "Wee Granny's Magic Bag" at the end of this page.  The children are enjoying reading this book.
