Welcome to the Summer Term in Year 1

All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 10th June 2019 due to the Phonics Screening test.

We hope that you have had a fantastic Easter holiday, filled with lots of delicious chocolate and you have all had the chance to have a well deserved break.

As we enter into the Summer Term we are really excited about starting our new topic- Chester Zoo.

We are going to be looking at how Chester zoo started and how things have changed up to the present day. Did you know that Chester Zoo actually started in Shavington? We are going to be finding out lots about its founder - George Mottershead and how his love for animals gave him the idea of creating a zoo without bars. We are going to be looking back in history as well as using our creative skills to create our very own zoo, complete with zoo animals!

In science, we are going to be looking at classifying animals into carnivores, omnivores and herbivores. We will also be continuing the animal theme in our music lessons- with the focus being around sea creatures.

Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit in on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on a Monday and Wednesday.

Water Bottles

All chidlren have been given a new water bottle at the begining of the year. Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water.  Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed ready for the new week.

In year 1 reading is really important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school every day. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary.

There is a new AutumnTerm homework grid for the children to complete.  This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website.  The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.

Children will also be given spelling homework. Spellings will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then they will have a quiz on these spelling the following Friday. Please support your child at home with these key spellings.
