Welcome to the Autumn Term in Year 1
We hope that you have had an amazing Summer holiday and are ready for the new and exciting year ahead. We are so excited about starting this new year together and can't wait to hear all about your adventures that you and your family have had this summer.
This term our topic is going to be - Who would live in a house like this?

We are going to be looking at how houses have changed through the years and how this affects the way people live. Maybe we will have a bit of help from a famous builder and his friends? We are going to start looking at dwellings and mud huts of the cave men and all different types of houses up to modern day properites.
In topic, we are going to be thinking about how we can create art work that would have been seen in the stone age, using lots of different materials. In science, we are going to be looking at different materials and how different materials behave differently in different conditions.
We are going to be supporting our learning with lots of exciting books, starting with Cave Man Dave.
PE
Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit in on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on a Monday and Wednesday.
Water Bottles
All chidlren have been given a new water bottle at the begining of the year. Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water. Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed ready for the new week. Please can you fill your child's water bottle on a monday so that they have fresh water at the beginning of each week.
Reading
In year 1, reading is extremely important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school every day. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this, we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary. Each week there will be a reading focus for you and your child to look at when you read at home- this will be stuck in your child's diary each week.
Homework
There is a new AutumnTerm homework grid for the children to complete. This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website. The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.
Children will also be given spelling homework. Spellings will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then they will have a quiz on these spelling the following Friday. Please support your child at home with these key spellings.
Phonics screening test
All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 10th June 2019 due to the Phonics screening test.
