Welcome to the Spring Term in Year 1

We hope that you have had a fantastic Christmas and New Year celebrations and have enjoyed your break. Thank you so much for all the generous Christmas presents that you bought for us, they were so lovely and so kind of you,

As we enter into the Spring Term we are super excited about starting our new topic- Can we travel around the world in 80 days?

We have got so many fun things lined up for you. We will be exploring the world - looking at maps, what different places are like, what traditions do they have, as well as thinking about how our lives are the same as those that live in different parts of the world and how they are different.

We will be starting our journey in ' Bonnie Scotland' and throughout the term we will also be visiting, China, Africa and England.

So get your bags packed, your passports ready and lets begin this terms exciting new learning journey.

Can we travel around the world in 80 days?

We will be starting our English this term with the wonderful book 'Wee Granny and the Ceilidh' by Elizabeth McKay and Martha Bogade. This is one book in a whole series of Wee Grannie's bag, where you will see lots of lovely scottish illustrations as well as some great scottish vocabulary to try and decipher!

PE

Children should bring a freshly washed PE kit in on the first day of term and their PE kits should remain in school until half term. Our PE lessons will be on a Monday and Wednesday.

Water Bottles

All chidlren have been given a new water bottle at the begining of the year. Every child in Year 1 has access to fresh drinking water.  Please ensure that your child has a school water bottle in school throughout the week. Your child's water bottle will be sent home every Friday so that it can be washed ready for the new week.

Reading

In year 1 reading is really important. Your child needs to have their book bag in school every day. They will change their reading book every week on a specific day. To help your child progress in this we ask that you read with your child as much as possible and that you record it in their diary.

Homework

There is a new AutumnTerm homework grid for the children to complete.  This grid will be sent home with the children in their home school diary and a copy of the grid will also be available on the Year 1 class page of the school website.  The children need to complete enough homework in the term to gain 12 points. There will be a homework exhibition at the end of each term so that children can share their successes with you and you can see the work completed by other classes.

Children will also be given spelling homework. Spellings will be glued into your child's diary on a Friday and then they will have a quiz on these spelling the following Friday. Please support your child at home with these key spellings.

Phonics screening test

All Year 1 children must be present in school for the week beginning Monday 10th June 2019 due to the Phonics screening test.
