Year 6 w.b. 11.09.17

Date: 13th Sep 2017 @ 6:33pm

This week in Year 6 we have been looking at our place value knowledge in Maths. We have been working with numbers up to and beyond 10 million. We have been using a place value grid to make sure that we know the value of each digit within a number.

We have started off this week, in Maths, with some times table games to help us with the rest of our maths work. The game is called 'Multiplication Squares' and is great fun! All you need is two dice, a grid and a coloured pen!  We have spent some time working on speed with our times tables too. We are aiming to beat the clock! It's really important for us to have a good knowledge of our times tables as it supports a lot of other units in our Math's curriculum.

In our English work this week we have listened to the first chapter of our new text, Friend or Foe. We have spent time thinking about how the main character, David, was feeling during the events and what life was like during WW2 when they had to be evacuated.

We have started to look at examples of diary entries from evacuees to identify features and vocabulary within them. We have started to think about own diary entry and the language we might want to use.

In our topic work we have thought about what we already know about WW2. We have then looked at why WW2 started, creating an information page using the information we had found. We have also been listening to some WW2 songs and making up our own lyrics. Our homework for the weekend is to learn the words ready for our trip on Monday!

Mrs Nicholls and Miss Brock have conducted the Head Boy and Head Girl presentations this week. They were so proud of all the children that chose to put themselves forward for the job along with all of the prefect letters that they received. It was a very difficult task but have chosen Owen and Ellen, with a fantastic team of prefects to support the staff and children, with jobs around the school at different times of the day. A big well done to all of those children as it's not always an easy thing to do, when presenting in front of audience!

A busy week all in all! Have a lovely weekend.

Homework Grids: As we are on our trip on Monday, our homework grids will be given out on Tuesday.

- Please could all children make sure they have a pair of outdoor shoes to change into for playtimes and lunch times.

- Please can all children make sure they have a waterproof coat in school.

- We have suggested that the children have outdoor clothing for their PE kits over the winter months as they will be using the field as much as possible. Tracksuit bottoms or leggings, to wear underneath their shorts, and a jumper, to keep warm, would be great.

- Our trip is on Monday: please can all children bring a coat and a comfortable pair of shoes. Your packed lunch should be in a plastic disposable bag. Don't forget your WW2 themed clothes - make sure they are warm!

- Remember to take your diaries home and bring them back to school every day.
